What Makes a Proper Attic Ladder

Can you imagine what it would be like to try to get into your attic without an attic ladder? The surprising thing is that a lot of homes don’t have attic access ladders. Those that do have owners who sincerely appreciate them! Attic ladders save time, space and make a person feel safer overall. A-frame ladders don’t necessarily have the sturdiness or sense of stability that an attic ladder does. Ladders that lean have to be stored somewhere and unless they are made of metal, they, too, feel unsteady and often have the feeling over being “rickety”. Nobody feels safe on a rickety ladder. A proper attic ladder is also the trap door into the space itself. Usually the ladder folds up neatly so that when the door is shut, you have no idea there is a ladder in there. The best ones are made of wood as they will not rust due to humidity and changes in temperature (which are much more keenly felt in an attic than say, a basement). The ladder should be constructed of sturdy wood that is properly treated so that warping and rot are not an issue. The joints in the folding mechanism should be made of something that won’t rust and won’t break easily. If you don’t have an attic ladder, it might be worth it to see about installing one. The safety benefits alone are worth the minimal cost, let alone the convenience. Consider an attic ladder instead of an a-frame or lean-to.
